On June 30th, 2016 Latino LinQ launched a new program: "Madres Promotoras". A two-pronged program to support our LGBTQ Latinex Youth. The main purpose of the program is to provide first: "parenting classes" for Latinx parents (whether they have or not LGBTQ children/youth) for the 2nd half of 2016. We will recruit a small group (6 to 10) of parents from those classes who will be part of the Madres Promotoras program: an initiative that will start in 2017 with a development plan for these community leaders who will teach other parents in the community on how to be a good parent or ally to LGBTQ Youth.
Although we're not working directly with youth in this program, the idea is to indirectly support youth by the way of parents peer education. Peer programs have been researched extensively and have been found to work in our Latinx community and we wanted to take advantage of that. We are lucky also to receive technical assistance from Latinos In The Deep South (a program of Latino Commission on Aids) on this initiative.
We were lucky enough to receive a small grant from Campaign for Southern Equality (check them out for more info about their work) at their last conference in March of this year to kick-start this program.
