This brief documentary film explores the challenges faced by a variety of Latino families with strong religious views and children who are gay, bisexual or transgender.
The film is produced by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC) and the “A La Familia” project of the HRC Religion and Faith Program. It explores the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people of deep faith (who have been told there is no place for them in their church of origin) and the experiences of their parents and siblings (who have been cruelly asked to choose between their religion and accepting their family).
In June 2016, a shooting during gay Latin night at an Orlando bar left 49 victims dead and dozens injured. Many of the Orlando nightclub shooting victims were LGBTQ Latinos and some had not disclosed their identity to their families. "We had been planning to show this documentary in October for many months," said Latino LinQ president Leo Martinez. "But after Orlando, the idea gained urgency. Messages of love, acceptance and under-standing are very important these days. Far too often, young adults find themselves victimized for differences of sexual attraction or gender identity and this stigma often results in depression, addiction, self-harm and even suicide."
